Every so often, I'll grab my good friend !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! (who's appeared on Jalopnik !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! in the past), and we'll snap some pictures of a car that I'm reviewing for Web2Carz. This past week, we took a Range Rover Evoque to a local quasi-off-road area to see if we could have any fun with it. Spoiler Alert: We did.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
The Evoque surprised me in how well it handled deep ruts and even deeper puddles. Then again, it's got a Range Rover badge, and I'm sure everybody would bitch and moan if it wasn't at least halfway capable.
Either way, this isn't about words, it's about pictures. Here, have a bunch of them. If you like 'em, do yourself a favor and go like Jeremy's !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , because he does way cooler shit than this . Enjoy, and have an awesome Independence Day weekend!
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
[ADDENDUM] It has come to my attention that this is not, in any way, off-roading. Semantically speaking, you're wrong; difficulty-wise, you're right. Having done more with more capable vehicles, I actually agree. But I liked the pictures, and people don't often do this with the Evoque, so here they are.

It's nice to see a truck being used in some to capacity of it's potential, sadly most people around here don't use Landrover's the for anything else but the mall.

Good timing, I've recently been gorging on LR2 off-road videos just to see if they are any kind of capable. Given that the evoke and LR2 and pretty similar underneath its not a shock that this can get a little wet. Granted the land rover brand has always done water well, or at least it seems to be what they focus on most for some reason *cough* England *cough* as far as cute utes go...this thing is as capable as anyone who buys one will ever care to find out.

Doesn't change the fact that it'll mostly be used for mall-crawling. This has been true of pretty much every recent Land Rover. Competent off road, but rarely used to their potential in the real world.

Only vehicles that can make the distance between malls without breaking down.

Yes it IS just a mall crawler.
This crapwagon WILL break down on you, and it will cost you a small fortune to fix it.
Good f*king luck when it craps out somewhere in the back country.
I was at a dealership once looking at these things and a rather well-off woman drove by me, stopped, backed up and rolled down her window... she asked me if I was considering buying one. I said yes, and she pointed out that it was one of the biggest mistakes she and he husband had ever made. Her's had been breaking down constantly and was a HUGE pain in the ass to have repaired.
Fuck Range/Land-Rover.

I'll just use a quote from Doug DeMuro here:
"In other words: the Range Rover is a highly capable, brilliant off-roading vehicle with a lot of highly capable, brilliant off-roading components, assuming that you have a comprehensive CarMax warranty to keep these components working properly."
They may break down, but when they're working, they're far superior to the Bro-mobile that is anything with a Jeep badge on it. I'd rather spend half my life in a service garage than spend ten minutes throwing that stupid fucking half-wave to other DMB-fanatic douchebags who roll on the highway without doors.

You have no idea. Even their carseats need to have locking cages to prevent dingo thefts.
That was invented by a guy named Bruce to quell his wife Sheila's fears after their neighbors Bruce and Sheila had their 3rd baby stolen by dingos. He got the idea from one of those catalytic convertor antitheft cages when his coworker Bruce's wife Sheila had her's stolen right off her ute.

There is a guidebook to overlanding I have written by someone who's been doing it for 30+ years in south African and elsewhere and has owned several land rovers and range rovers and in the buying guide you will find this:
"While the Discovery 3& 4 are truly brilliant vehicles, they can be extremely expensive to run. My urgent advice to anyone considering one of these fine vehicles, is that if it's new, takeout a motor-plan and extended warranty. If it's used, beware of ones with over 100000 kms on the clock. This probably means that they are about to be troublesome. And if they are, they are costly in the extreme to maintain and even more costly to repair. So purchase all the warranties that are available. Or, buy a helicopter; It may be cheaper to run."

Ease off the button friend, a land rover is an amazing machine and I will fully admit that it can do some things better than my 80 series cruiser, they just aren't built well. I have boundless respect for land rover and range rovers and their capabilities...I'm just smart enough to know not to own one. BTW, I love me a Jeep till I die (owned a 95 XJ) but they suck balls at carrying cargo or towing trailers, a Jeep isn't the right tool for every off road situation.

You know this evoke can carry heavier loads and pull heavier trailers than a Wrangler unlimited right? 1200 lbs cargo vs 980 (JKU rubicon) and 4400 lbs trailer vs 3500 (jku rubicon). Just saying; Jeeps kill it crawling, better than just about anything, but they are lousy touring vehicles.

That's also a completely different class of SUV. The Evoque is shorter than my Civic. That GX is the size of my apartment building and is based off a Land Cruiser variant, which is one of the better large 4x4s ever made.

I, and other owners on this site, can & will fully attest to the JKU's severe lack of towing capability. 3500lbs just isn't that impressive. From my personal experience, carrying a couple of quads, a dirtbike, and associated gear is enough to give the 3.6 some trouble... it's not like it's impossible, just not preferable to run 4K RPM and higher for an hour or longer (to me, personally). I've also got 3.73's, instead of 3.21's.
But according to the OP, apparently I'm just a DMB-fanatic douchebag with no doors, so take whatever I say with a grain of salt... Also, what is DMB?

I actually really dig the Wrangler Rubicon. Dana 44s are practically military-grade. I approach every car with excitement; a degree of subjectivity is part of the job. I just have issues with the people that drive certain cars. Like a pit bull, Jeep's problems lie in nurture, not nature.
Just like the big-boy Range Rover, the Evoque has its intake mounted above the driver's side fender. It's not as high as the full-sized Range, but it's still at a formidable height.
Land Rover's site says that it can wade up to 500 mm, or about 19.6 inches. That's enough to fully submerge the wheels.

If you're getting out-wheel'd by a RangeRover with your 80 series triple locked tank, you're broken, not the truck. You've got a machine that is fully mechanical which demands skill to off roading but you applauding a computer on wheels. It maintains forward momentum because brakes grab free-spinning wheels to transfer power to the wheels that aren't spinning so it keeps moving forward a bit more fluidly than someone running around with open diffs then having to stop and lock the diffs. If you're one who loves computer gadgetry, then a any modern 4x4 with traction control could out-wheel you by your standards
HammerheadFistpunch
> CACressida
07/03/2014 at 13:21 | 0 |
Who said anything about traction? I was referring to better departure angles and more free travel in the coils. I know I can go anywhere a disco could, but the disco has more flexibility up front that my 80. I bought my 80 triple locked on purpose, I like mechanical grip.

Yes it is a mall crawler. And those pictures don't impress me. Going through a few puddles and driving on a non-rutted gravel/dirt road is something just about any car can do. I've driven on similar roads when I go camping with my PT Cruiser. Here's a PT that did similarly "difficult" offroading:
And I would rate a PT Cruiser as 'poor' for true offroading capability.

I test drove one and it was impressive going through the Range Rover "obstacle" course. It is a little small, but I think it's an okay vehicle for most purposes. Can we please stop pretending that a photo of one of these joke 4x4's driving through a puddle is evidence of some kind of off road capabilities.
Is a Renault Laguna especially good off road, or is it, y'know, a car. Now, maybe the Evoque is more off road capable than its market rivals, I have no idea, but the truth that we all know is that, on those wheels and tyres, you'd be better off in any old 2wd econobox with 13" steelies and big cushy tyres. well, sure but the numbers are the numbers the Evoque can carry and tow more, thats all. The Suspension geometry, axles and spring load just don't add up to a great heavy laden vehicle with the JKU. My '97 80's series cruiser is about the same size, with less power and fewer gears but its still rated to tow 1500 lbs more and carry nearly twice as much inside. This is because it has better lateral stiffness in the front axle (less flex) and stronger axles with more load rated suspension. That being said a JKU on 35's will mop the floor with my cruiser in really technical terrain...at least without a lot of body damage to the cruiser. Again, strengths and weaknesses.

i have to agree with you about the Evoque being a grocery getter, but the "Fuck Range/Land Rover" part i might disagree:
My father drives a LR Freelander 2 and its as capable as a mountain goat. He gave me his old XJ and bought a Freelander 2 back on '07. The car is amazingly capable and never broke down, even in Brazil's countryside (read even where the gasoline is made out of pee and dirt). And now he bought himself a '13 Freelander 2, which has that Ford 2.0 4 banger engine, with 240hp...as opposed to the 3.2, 6 banger from Volvo the old one had.
Both engines are very tough and satisfied all of his needs, which is quite a lot since we tow our boat, dirtbikes and do long roadtrips in it.

All Im saying is I have been very surprised how well the JKU has towed. the extra wheel base has really helped keep it tracking nicely. also the BDS springs I have in it dont sag at all with the kind of loads I put behind it.... As a former Land Rover factory technician, I can tell you that the LR2/Evoque is heavily based on the Volvo XC60. I will say, the dealership I used to work at would hold "farm events" at their private property (2,000 acres) and the LR2/Evoque would hang with the LR3/4 all day. The Range Rovers, with their extended overhang and gross weight, were the vehicles we'd have to handle with kid gloves.

We can make cameras the size of *insert something really small here*, but sensors have yet to downsize from a damn brick? I've never understood this thing with big ass sensors. Unless it's not a sensor...It is a sensor, right?

That's no reason to not like a brand or vehicle. Some of the best cars I've ever owned were ones that others told me were pieces of shit.
But, that's fine. More for me. :)

The Evoque is VERY reliable. I know. I'm a Jaguar Land Rover tech. Up front it shares the same powertrain as the Focus ST and out back a rear axle from the LR2 and Volvo vehicles.
99% of them only come in for tires, lube, and a reflashs.

Almost every time I see a nice Range Rover or Land Rover, something in me wants to trade in my bimmer for one of these British beauties. And that's because I'm a stupid person.

Bored at work? Way to troll, though.
Far superior to the Bro-mobile that is anything with a Jeep badge? Yeah, that depends on what the use is, but since they are designated (or at least marketed) as off-road vehicles, I'll treat them as such.
Against the Wrangler? Come on. Only the Defender might stand a chance, but it still loses on the rocks due to numbers disadvantage.
The Grand Cherokee, the KL Cherokee, and even the Com/Patriot twins are also very effective off-roaders in their class. At best, they trade evenly with the LRs and RRs.
I don't own a Jeep (though I wheel one), but the RR is far superior? From what I've seen, I don't think so.
And wth is a DMB? Department of Motoring Dumbasses, or something?

only reason evoques and other luxury cars aren't popular in aus is because of the luxury tax on "LUXURY" cars.

how expensive do you think an evoque is? a Yeti starts at nearly £17k for a 1.2TSI with 105 hp and 175 N/m. an Evoque starts at £29k with a 2.2 diesel with 150 hp and 400 N/m. Your pricing is wrong and the evoque is a better car at off roading, they didn't get stuck and didn't say it was anywhere near it's limit so I think it's safe to say the car could go further.

Well, i live in Albania, and here a Decently equipped Yeti Ambition (SE? I belive for UK) Costs ~16000 Euros (~12700 Pounds) with the 1.2 TSI Engine and the 7 speed DSG.
The bone stock Evoque on the other hand starts at 46500 Euros. While that might not be a perfect 1/3 it's pretty close.
And Yes i know the Evoque is much better than my yeti on the rough stuff, i'm not stupid, i was referring to the photos.

We have a similar tax in the us, plus a land cruiser 200 or 79 is damn expensive and they sell great there

When a company calls in one of the fucking Spice Girls to help on a car, they/it lose any respect they might have got from me.

I own an Evoque 2 door and a 99 Discovery. I also own a Subaru Forester. The Subaru is broken far more often than either of the Landies, and my Disco has 200k and goes towing (cars) and offroading probably for 80% of its miles. Evoque has been on trails once. You cant imagine the looks you get with an Evoque covered in mud...
